Depending on what type of coffee maker you own, you do have a number of options for making coffee on the go. While none of these will compare to coffee made using fresh coffee beans and piping hot from the kitchen oven, at least you can have your coffee fix while you travel and try to plan on making other travel arrangements. But how do you do that? Here are some tips that might help you along your way.
How do you make coffee without a filter? The easiest way to brew coffee with a drip coffee maker is one that has an automatic button or switch-on switch that will activate the water when it is filled with coffee. However, some automatic drip coffee makers, such as those that brew six cups at once, also have a touch button that will activate the brewing. The nice thing about these is that they are not limited to only making coffee. They can also make tea, hot chocolate and even water!
How do you use a coffee maker without a pot or warming plate? First of all, it is important to understand that not all coffee makers require a warming plate or pot. This is a necessity for some drip coffee makers, such as the Melitta Mugs, Keurig brewers, and others. These are generally the coffee maker without the pot that will produce a thicker cup of coffee since it requires water to be heated to a higher temperature to begin with and then cold brewed. If you have a regular pot or pan on your stove, these items will work with any typical pot or pan, even if they do not fit on the stove. These items will simply transfer the heat from the burner or stove to the coffee pot.
A heating plate is used to increase the temperature of the water that is heated, and thus making coffee more intense and darker. Some prefer to use a pot without a warming plate, and for them a boiling pot is preferred. These coffee pots can be made from glass, porcelain, cast iron, or stainless steel. The pots themselves come in many different sizes and shapes, depending upon what you prefer.
The Keurig brewer is probably the best known type of single serve coffee maker, as well as being the most common in households. This brewer consists of a single metal plate, called a K-Cup, that has a hole in the center of it. As the coffee is poured into the K-Cup, it forces a foam into the coffee grounds through the hole in the K-Cup, which causes the coffee to be ground and concentrated. This is a very easy brewing method, and the K-Cup must be refilled regularly, though this is not generally an issue for single cup coffee makers.
The French press is a type of coffee maker that looks very much like a traditional coffee mug and is capable of producing coffee with a higher degree of caffeine, and less acidity than coffee prepared in the other brewing methods. This is perhaps the easiest of all coffee maker styles to operate. The coffee is poured into the mouth of the French press, which has a button on the side that locks the press into place. The lid rises up over the coffee to seal in the flavors and create a scoopable glass. The coffee is immediately ready to drink.
If you prefer your coffee with a bit more flavor, try a handkerchief. Simply fill the cup of your handkerchief with coffee, add your choice of coffee grounds, and gently swirl the handkerchief in the coffee mixture. This cup of coffee is absolutely perfect when it comes to adding extra flavor, but because it’s so simple to make, most people prefer to use them for regular cups instead of going through the trouble of making one from scratch. If you enjoy the rich taste of coffee grounds, try a different brewing method such as the French press or a coffee maker with a burr grinder.
Some people like to keep their coffee grounds on hand to use in the future. When you buy coffee grounds from the store, they usually come in small packets, and it may take several months for them to mature enough to use easily. When you decide to go this route, however, be sure to keep your coffee grounds from sitting around too long or getting stale. Buy coffee grounds in bulk so that you can have plenty on hand when you need it. Just make sure you use them up before they become too old.
